Chapter Six

Nettie hesitated before going to the table where Samuel’s new employee, William Kauffman was seated. It had been a week before Thanksgiving when she’d overheard Samuel telling Rachel how things had started falling into place for him when he hired William. Samuel explained to Rachel how William was a gifted craftsman, and there was now hope that Bridget’s order would be finished by Christmas, or at least the bed and two nightstands.

It was never wise to eavesdrop, her mother had always said, but Nettie had to keep listening when she heard her name mentioned. While she wiped clean a corner table, Rachel sat with Samuel only a few feet away. The giddiness in Rachel’s voice had irritated Nettie when she said, “This is perfect that William is interested in Nettie. They will make a cute couple.”

Nettie had suspected before that matchmaking was in the air in the Weaver family, and it was directed at her. Martha asked Judith to make her a new dress in a lavender color. Her boss and friend explained that maybe she’d decide to go to a singing or another youth activity. Could Martha and Robert be anxious for me to get married and move out of their house? She’d loved being part of their family. It’d been lonely after her parents had died. She had been an only child with few distant relatives. Moving to Fields Corner had opened up a new life for her when she became a part of the wunderbaar Amish community in the small town.

Did William realize the Weaver women and maybe the men wanted him to ask her out on a date? Should she make William wait on her to take his order until her heart stopped racing?

Well, that wouldn’t be nice, since he only had thirty minutes for lunch. He’d told her that the first day he’d eaten in Weaver’s Bakery for lunch. Apparently, he had two fifteen-minute breaks during the day plus his lunchtime. She recalled how he’d glanced back at her that first day he walked back to work. At the same time, she had turned her head to stare at him. Her face had felt warm when he smiled at her, knowing she had watched him leaving the restaurant.

Josie interrupted her thoughts and asked, “Aren’t you going to take William’s order? I can, but my sister is supposed to be here soon.”

“Ach, sorry. I was daydreaming. I’ll take it.” As Nettie walked to get William’s order, she wondered if Rachel or Martha happen to be watching to see if their matchmaking plan might work. Although it was sweet they wanted to fix her up with William, it was disheartening at the same time. Didn’t they think she could get a date on her own? Okay, so she hadn’t met anyone since she’d moved to Fields Corner, except for a few dates with widower James Beachy. There hadn’t been any chemistry between her and James. It hadn’t been in God’s plan for her to marry James.
